Day 4 and 5…Seward

Not many of you have probably heard of Seward, Alaska because I know I sure hadn’t. But once I read that Seward contained all of the whales and sea life and of course the glaciers, I knew we had to check it out!

We started our adventure very early in the morning and the guides gave us these waterproof pants, boots and coats to wear. Unfortunately it was raining, which made it extra cold and wet that day. I think the air temperature was in the upper 40s so it was pretty chilly out.

On our boat ride over to our kayak spot, we were able to see so many different types of sea life it was truly amazing. I have never seen a whale in real life and this was a jaw dropping moment for me.

I mean who wants to see seals after you see a bunch of whales?? I was hoping for penguins!

Then we made it into the kayaks and I have to say it was a bit nerve-wracking just being in the ocean in the middle of nowhere and feeling so small. As you can see there are small icebergs just floating in the water next to our kayaks, again such a surreal strange sight.

I tried to teach my mom how to paddle in sync as she was a bit of a newbie with the kayak. It took her a little bit to get used to it, but by the end she picked it up…after me sweating in the back and yelling at her a bit:)

Someone in our group took this unreal video. The size of the iceberg that fell into the ocean is hard to imagine since we are standing 100 yards back from the glacier. But you could tell our guide was nervous when this happened. We were all linked up eating lunch when it fell in and he instantly told us to let go of each other in case we had to paddle through some huge waves from the after effect. Luckily, the waves dissipated into smaller waves by the time they hit us 100 yards. He said that’s why we stay so far back from the glacier, but he admitted he had never seen anything like this on any of his guides before.

We heard about this local towny bar, so we had to stop in after our long day on the water.

It was a towny vibe but everyone was so nice! We went early before dinner, but I heard it gets pretty rowdy at night.

I mean they had cigarettes in a vending machine, that’s how old school this place was.

Day 5…

The next morning we wanted to hike to a glacier that wasn’t too far away. Check out the pdf for more info! But we hiked about a mile, it was also a pretty easy hike that I would rate a 2 on level of difficulty.

There’s the fading glacier behind us. I was hoping we could walk on it and you could do a more strenuous hike if you wanted to walk on the glacier but we opted just for the easy view.

We did get a pretty cool bonus and come across a moose and her baby about 30 yards away.

Mary the Moose just munching on some breakfast.

Then we left the glacier hike and drove a little bit to this wildlife center because darn’t all we wanted to see some BEARS! Moose were great to see, but I needed to see one bear even if it was behind a metal fence.

I was trying to become friends with him, but he wasn’t having any of it.

We then hopped in the car and headed a bit further and headed to this adorable brewery with some heaters and fires outside so we could enjoy the mountain view.

We headed back into Anchorage and had to get one crab dinner to experience the real Alaskan Crab.

Thanks for following along on this Alaskan adventure! Obviously, you can stay longer at each location and extend your trip. I choose to do shorter trips because my kids are still young and it’s too hard to be long for extended periods, but this trip can be altered. Please consider purchasing the detailed trip itinerary PDF in the Store to get all the details that were left out. And good luck to you!! #adventurealways
